What is Windsock?
A windsock is an old-fashioned device for weather forecasting and as to why it is used in oil and gas fields we have the explanation below.
Windsock is a conical piece of fabric, in the form of a tube which is aimed at helping in the identification of the wind speed as well as its direction.
Windsocks are perhaps known to anyone who has been to an airport or has been inside an aircraft but they are also safety equipment used in the oil and ga
s industry.
How Windsocks Work A wind vane is a unit that is mounted in a tall support and which is free to rotate with the wind. the one part of the cone is bigger and it has a hole if it to allow the air to through the block.
In some of the designs the wind controls the movements of the cone and this give fabric a chance to move.
The cone will spread out with an increase in wind velocity; therefore, Windsock will always rotate to the down-wind position.
The bigger the increase of the volume of the tube, the more force it has to utilize when working on the wind it transports.
Some of the ones are large ones, small ones, colorful ones or shaped in a different way that enables it to serve a different purpose. One can construct a basic windsock from nylon or polyester fabric material since the fabric is quite lightweight.
This coil can be between 3-6 feet long while being between 1-2 feet at the opening end of the tube. Specific dangerous colours are orange and white as far as the camera is concerned as it needs to be easily visible.
Some of these windsocks come with a weight at the tail end to enable the maintenance of the cone shape.
